Training at ICRS

International Centre for Radio Science has been training students for the last 22 years, dreaming of making India not only the Skilful (कौशल भारत - कुशल भारत) but also motivates students to contribute in empowering India as a responsible Engineer and Citizen. The Training will be given in the Project mode in which it is mandatory to write two Research Papers , one for Conference and one for Journal Publication. At ICRS training is given to undergraduates of Engineering (ECE/CSE/IT/EE/EEE/ME/Civil) and M.Sc. (Electronics) previous in the following areas:

Hardware Based Training

Microwave Remote sensing has diverse applications and it has been identified as a technique with good potential to help nation's economic growth and in solving some of its problems. Remote sensing can be applied in the areas like prediction of climatic conditions, rainfall, cloud cover etc., and to help identify the areas covered by clouds and forest cover etc.

The Active MRS uses the scattering properties of the terrains and targets for analysing the data obtained and differentiating one target from the other. In Active MRS, the two important parameters of radar, i.e., capability to produce very high-resolution imagery and to measure the distance/altitude with high accuracy are also exploited.

The passive MRS is carried out using Microwave Radiometers. It is possible to use this technique because all-natural materials emit electromagnetic radiation, which is a complex function of physical and electrical properties of the emitting surface.

Dielectric constant, also named as permittivity, describes the ability of a material to emit and absorb, scatter and reflect portion of microwave signal incident upon it. Microwave emission and backscattering of natural Earth materials like water, soil, snow and ice depend upon its electrical parameters. The behavior of these materials and their properties can also be characterized by electrical parameters like Dielectric Constant. Dielectric constant can be measured by followoing types of technique:

• Through Microwave Test Benches

► Resonant Cavity Method
► Free Space Method
► Wave-Guide Cell Method

The Antennas are constructed in wide variety of geometrical configuration and feeding arrangements. There are various methods to measure the Antenna Parameters which are following:

• Radiation Pattern
• Gain Measurement
• Directivity Measurement
• Polarization Measurement

At ICRS, we have the facility to measure physical and electrical properties of soil such as:
• Soil Moisture
• Soil Texture

Dielectric constant is the most important electrical property of rock which has a high resistivity. Rocks are multiphase system which consist of crystal, as well as amorphous solids, liquid and gases. This complicates the study of physical properties.

Water is the most abundant natural resource on Earth. It is colorless, odorless and tasteless liquid. The water which contains dissolved salt molecules is defined as Saline Water. By using Microwave Remote Sensing one can estimate the salinity present in the Water.

The snow and ice are different states of water. The frozen water at 0°C, is the state of water known as ice. The snow is found on earth and has different physical and electrical properties. Ice is found on sea as well as on land also has different physical and electrical properties.

India is an agricultural country, where its 60% population depends on the farming. The Dielectric constant of vegetation like Leaves, root, seed plays an important role in identification of the type of the crop or tree and how much water is present. One can also estimate the quantity of water needed for irrigating the trees and crop.

Software Based Training

Data received from space-borne Microwave Active and Passive sensors of satellites like Chandrayaan-1, Chang'e, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, Apollo, S-MOS

• Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR),
• Scatterometer,
• Radiometer

are processed using fast processing systems and software (MATLAB and ENVI) at high throughput rate so that delivery time of processed data to user can be minimized.

Hardware based Projects

Assembly of Active and Passive sensors like scatterometer, radiometer at different frequencies and study of electrical and physical properties natural earth materials like

• Soil,
• Rock,
• Water,
• Snow and Ice,
• Vegetation etc.

Note1: This gives brief about areas of training. There could be many more areas that may emerge while discussing with the students who will come for training at the ICRS.

Note 2: At ICRS we also provide facilities for M.E/M.Tech and PhD students for doing their research and writing their thesis as per the student convenience and approval by their guide.

At ICRS summer training is given to undergraduates of Engineering Colleges and M.Sc. (Electronics) previous.
For students of M.Sc. (Electronics) final, MCA and M.Tech/ME, facilities are available for doing project/thesis work

Limited Number of Fellowships are Available for M.E./M.Tech Thesis project (Electronics/Electrical/ Civil/ CSE/ IT) for One Semester and Two Semester.

Trainee will be awarded fellowship of Rs 19,200/- (Ninteen Thousand Two Hundred Only).
Fee Structure with Fellowship:
One Semester Rs. 45,000/-
Two Semester Rs. 90,000/-
Advantage for Two Semester M. Tech Thesis Project:
M.Phil. Certificate will also be awarded.

Complete an Training Request Form[PDF] and Submit it along with Scanned Copy of Confirmation Letter from Training and Placement Cell of your Institute via Email:

Step 2: Receive notification

Within 1 week of submitting your training request application, a confirmation mail will be sent to you.

Step 3: Pay your fees

In order to hold your seat. You must pay your Training Fee within 2 weeks after receiving the Notification. You must send attested copy of all the supporting documents (10th ,12th , B.E. / B. Tech Marksheets), Confirmation Letter from Training and Placement Cell of the Institute and duly filled Training application form along with the demand Draft.
